Our Story

CrossRoads began on the campus of Old Dominion University in the fall of 2000. Our goal was to impact and shape the lives of college students.  After several years of meeting at different locations, CrossRoads began renting space from Larchmont Baptist Church.

In 2005, under the leadership of Pastor Kevin Tremper, CrossRoads was relaunched with a strategic focus of reaching the campus, the community, and the world.  In 2011, Larchmont Baptist gifted the building to CrossRoads, giving CrossRoads a permanent home at its current location.

What We Believe

ABOUT GOD

God is the creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. People in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ are to live in holiness and obedience as they submit to the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. Sent by the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit applies Christ's saving work by enlightening the minds of sinners to their need to be saved. He renews and indwells each believer upon salvation, becoming their source of assurance, strength, wisdom, and gifting for building up the church. The Holy Spirit guides believers in understanding and applying the Bible. Appropriated by faith, His power and control empower believers to lead a life of Christ-like character and bear fruit for the Father's glory.

ABOUT SALVATION

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

ABOUT ETERNITY

Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or in union with God, through forgiveness and salvation. After death, the soul spends  eternity in either Heaven or Hell.

ABOUT EVANGELISM AND MISSION

As a response to the grace and mercy that God has showed us, it is only fitting that we obey the command to go and make disciples. If we understand what it means to be human correctly, we know that we have built into us the ability to reflect the very image and nature of God to the world around us. We believe the most effective form of evangelism is tied to reflecting His image and bringing His presence to a broken world. As we earn the right to be heard we dedicate ourselves to proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in order to bring others to faith. As people respond to God's invitation of relationship, His kingdom is advanced. We believe our witness should be present and influence the campus, the community, and the world.

ABOUT JESUS

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

ABOUT MAN

Man is made in the image of God. He is the supreme object of God's creation. Although God designed man to have a fellowship with Him, man became alienated from God through disobedience. As a result, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and choose to sin against God. Man is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through his own efforts.

ABOUT ETERNAL SECURITY

Because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives this security.

ABOUT THE CHURCH

All who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord are united with Him as members of His body, the one true church. Scripture teaches believers to gather for worship, prayer, fellowship, and the teaching of the Word; to observe Baptism and Communion as established by Jesus Christ; to offer service to the body through development and use of talents, gifts, and outreach to the world. The local expression of the church is wherever God's people meet regularly in obedience to this command. Cared for and led by Elders and leaders, church members are to work together in love and unity for the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ.

ABOUT MARRIAGE

We believe that Marriage unites one man and one woman in a lifetime commitment to each other. Marriage provides for intimate companionship, pure sexual expression, procreation, and reflects the relationship of Christ and the church. A husband is commanded to love his wife as Christ loved the church. A wife is commanded to submit to her husband as the church submits to Christ.
